How Google Reader Hooked Me
For the longest time I used NetNewsWire Lite for my feeds. I never wanted to drop any cash on an RSS Reader, because I thought it just wasn’t important enough software to spend money on, especially when free versions are available. I was however pretty settled on the idea that software was the way to go. For some reason or another though, NetNewsWire would sit on my dock mostly untouched. When I would finally open it, the number of feeds would get a bit overwhelming, and I’d end up just closing it again, so as not be nagged by the big red bubble telling me that I had over 100 unread items. After a few experiences like that, I gave up on reading feeds for a while.
Then one day, while looking at my own FeedBurner stats, I noticed that most of my subscribers were using Google Reader(about 40%). I started to wonder what was so great about an online feed reader? Needless to say, I was intrigued, so I thought I’d give a shot.
As I logged into Reader for the first time, I imported all my feeds, scanned through them, and played with the features. I tried starring and tagging items, which I thought was great, but I wasn’t hooked yet. Then while poking through my settings, I noticed www.google.com/reader/m. That’s when I realized: I now have access to all my favorite sites anywhere! Since I have a Razr, navigating to any website that isn’t optimized for mobile use is pretty terrible. And even if they are, I get unbelievably frustrated typing in multiple domain names with a number pad. But now with everything centralized, I could set Google Reader Mobile as a favorite. Now anytime I’m sitting around bored somewhere, I can catch up on my feeds, rather than just sitting around and wishing my iPod had more games on it. Since this realization, I’ve started using RSS more and more. I’m subscribing to more sites, looking for new blogs to read, and finally enjoying that beauty of syndication.

hell yeah man, Google Reader is one of those 3 sites I have open all the time. I have had it for about a year now but didn’t really start using it hardcore until the last 4-5 months. I just wish it would tell you exactly how many new items you have instead of 100+. I have to go to all items and page down until it shows them all to get a total. Something I also like is they give you the ability to have a link blog which you can then post on your site. People can go their and see what feed items you thought were cool enough for them to see. Right now there is now customization for it but I’m sure it will come soon.

posted on May 25, 08:22 AMI’ve heard of google reader, but what really interests me is the mobile version. I’ve tried other ways, such as RSS feeds in opera, but those aren’t good.
I’m just afraid that it won’t work well with NewsFire (I have my own newsfire system, and I like the looks), or I may end up just dropping it completely.
