I’ll preface this post by saying that I still use AIM from time to time, and Adium is a fantastic client for that, but as I get more and more into Twitter, I find that it starting to take the place of IM. Not that it does the same thing, but what I need to get done can be done more efficiently in the this new medium. With that said, I give you my 5 reasons that I’d rather Twitter than IM.
1) I can’t get stuck in conversations.
Of course there are times that I like being in IM conversations, but sometimes I just don’t have time. With Twitter, I can get the information I need, talk with people, but I never had to worry about being stuck in a conversation when I need to be working.
2) Direct messages are short and sweet
If you just want to deliver me information privately, give me a direct message. If it doesn’t fit into a direct message, that’s what email is for. No need to ever say, “hey, sign on so I can send you this link”.
3)Conversations can still happen
I can still have informal conversations on twitter that I used to have on AIM. Those 4 or 5 liners? Just use the @ syntax. Never again will there be that: “Hey. What’s up? Not much. You? Not much.”
4) I can tell everyone the same thing in one window
I don’t have to type my message in ten different windows to tell ten different people the same thing.
5) I can get it all on my phone
I have AIM on my phone, but it’s slow and isn’t practical. Twitter text messages mean that you can reach me anytime. I get my direct messages delivered there, so if you direct me something, I’ll get it right away.
Twitter is something I like but hate. The @user crap annoys the piss out of me since that’s not what Twitter is meant for. I don’t want to see people’s personal chats out in the open. When Twitteriffic keeps going off because that’s happening I dump the user that’s doing it. I’m a bitch like that. =)
Using Twitter for the 1 to many aspect. That’s great. That’s what I love about it. Say it once in one place and it goes out to all. Simple and effective.
Otherwise it’s all about text//chat//email. Viddyou communications are 90% threw chat. If someone starts talking to me and I’m busy – I have zero problem saying I can’t talk. I feel no obligation to chat if I don’t have the time. A lot of people are too damn nice and will chat when they shouldn’t or can’t but feel obligated to converse. Screw that!
I have Twitter on my mobile, but it’s a smarphone so I use the m.twitter.com in Opera. I have yet to mess with the direct messaging. I have yet to really put time into getting others on Twitter since most of my friends are more text message//chat based and spend more time offline than on lately by choice. Guess it’s all a matter of what works fer ya!
Now back to wrapping up an identity package so I can get paid monies.
Werd em up.
Hi my name is Clintus and I’m a Twitter addict. Amen brother.
I agree however people who carry on conversations sans direct message clutter the other conversations I’m actually following. People need to either use the DM functionality or IM or be dropped!
