Sometimes blogging feels like yelling into space. Even with statistic software and feed tracking, numbers are hard to translate into eyes actually scanning or let alone reading articles. Who knows what those stats are saying? 200 people subscribe here. Okay. For all I know that could be 5 people reading and 195 zombies who have simply managed to click my RSS link and magically it appeared in their feed reader. I mean, my RSS button is pretty shiny! Or maybe 195 are all a guy named George using 195 different clients, just to make me feel better about my readership…
With such a feeling though, how do I strike up a conversation? Isn’t this the whole point? I mean, besides the unbelievably vain starting point of “Hey, look at me! I have a blog too! Notice me!”
So with that as an idea, I’d like to ask: Why do you blog? Do you love the attention? Do you just like to talk, but no one in real life listens? Perhaps you just like keyboards and palm mashing, and miraculously you come up with a coherent post after every mashing session. Whatever the case may be, I’d like to know. What inspires us to blog?
I do it for multiple reasons. First, it’s a way of logging things and thoughts that I find interesting or worthy of noting. Second, it’s a way to demonstrate my superior knowledge in certain areas (my blog talks about e-government and grants management, for example), which helps me connect with similar people and, often, get work! Third, it’s a way of connecting across the void with others. For example, one of my more popular posts is a set of instructions for moving from Thunderbird v1.x on the PC to the Mac. I get so many e-mails from people because of that post! We’re here to help each other, after all, and the free, fluid communication of blogging is a simple way to make that happen.
