Here’s my list of lesser known Mac apps that aren’t going to cost you anything. I hate getting excited with top 10 lists on digg, only to realize that it would cost be upwards of $100 to use all the apps on the list. So here’s my attempt to solve that problem:
1)Taco Html Edit
It works a lot like Dreamweaver, where you can code and watch a live preview of your work. It also does a pretty good job rendering the preview. The best part is: it’s free!
2) Blue Coconut – The idea’s pretty simple. Have you ever been browsing a shared iTunes library, and thought it might be nice to copy a song or two to your computer? Well that’s what Blue Coconut is for.
3) Khronos – Khronos is a simple app that lets you keep track of the time you spend on your projects, letting you start and stop your project clock. Plus it will handle printing invoices.
4) Renamer4Mac – It’s pretty easy to rename one file at a time in finder, but once you get to more than three or four at a time, it can quickly become pretty tedious. That’s where Renamer4Mac comes in. Simply put, it’s the mass renamer that OS X forgot. Renamer4Mac can pretty much do anything you need to when renaming files in bulk.
5) WhatSize – Sure you can hit Get Info on every file and folder, but if you want an easier way of finding out what is taking up most of your hard drive space, WhatSize is perfect. It will calculate the space taken up by all files and folers on any hard drive you’d like it to.
6) CocoaMySQL – CocoaMySQL makes working with MySQL databases a breeze when developing on your machine. I’ve found it especially useful when coding with Ruby on Rails. If you’d like to have an interface more like PhpMyAdmin, rather than doing everything manually, CocoaMySQL will make your life a lot easier.
7) Email Backup – Email Backup is pretty self explanatory. It will make scheduled back ups of the most common Mac mail clients(Apple Mail, Microsoft Entourage v.X and 2004, Eudora, and Thunderbird)
8) Schoolhouse – Schoolhouse is a must have for any college or high school student. It will keep track of your classes and your projects, letting you set levels of importance, and then track your grades once you complete them. It even comes with a GPA calculator, iPod and iCal integration, and automated charts based on the grades you plug in. Like I said before, a must have for high school or college sutdents.
9) BitRocket – I have to say, that for a Torrent client, I normally use XTorrent, but since this is list is for the lesser known apps, I thought I’d give BitRocket a mention, because it has that built in RSS reader, which can be very useful. It also happens to be a pretty full featured torrent client. It’s in it’s early stages, but so far it looks great.
10) SoulseeX – If you were ever a Soulseek user, and miss it on your Mac, this may be what you’re looking for. I’ve tried other Soulseek clients for the mac, and so far this is the only I’ve found that works consistently.
