I just signed up for a tumblelog at tumblr.com . At first I was skeptical, wondering why I would need ANOTHER blog that I’ll probably stop updating in 5 seconds, but as I got into it it, I realized that this could be useful. And you may be wondering, how can a stripped down blog with no search, tags, or comments be useful? Well, maybe if you’re the business type, it’s not, but if you’re a creative person, this is it. This is your stream of consciousness blog. You don’t need to worry about spelll checking, proof reading, or writing for feedback. This isn’t writing for the crowd, this is writing for yourself. This is your opportunity to get your thoughts down. This is the notebook you carry around in your back pocket while you browse the web.
The importance of getting your ideas down, I believe to be immensely important. In a recent interview by Merlin Mann with Jonathan Coulton, the point of catching those ideas as they come was mentioned. To miss those ideas, is to maybe never get them back. While many of those ideas may be crap, there are going to be a few gems that you can’t afford to forget.
Now I’m not saying this wasn’t possible before. It was. I think LiveJournal served that purpose for many people. I’m sure blogging does it now for others. And maybe just having a notebook works. But if you like the idea of a simple place that’s going to keep your ideas, rather than having stacks and stacks of text files as I always end up with, maybe tumblelogging is right for you.
